ZOOS AROUND THE WORLD

ZOOS AROUND THE WORLD

The Taronga Park Zoo, Sydney, Australia

It’s hard to get close to a wild animal. Some animals might charge yon
the way a rhinoceros does, and yon would have to scramble to get away.
Other animals, like the giraffe, run away from you so fast that you
barely get a look at them. Still other animals are so rare that they are
hard to find—such as the giant turtle. You can see all these animals
and many more if you go to a zoo. In a zoo, the animals are all safely
behind bars or fences or moats, so you can watch them all you want.

There are zoos in nearly every country in the world. Some zoos have
speeial features that make them different from others. For example, the
Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem, Israel, has many animals that are mentioned
in the Bible. The San Diego Zoo in California has the largest collection
of animals anywhere. The nearby San Diego Wild Animal Park has more
land—1,800 acres (728 hectares)—than any other zoo.
