THE GIANT KILLER
Long ago, some people, called the Philistines, had a giant named Goliath
in their army. He was so big and fierce that he could frighten almost
anyone. But a shepherd boy named David was not afraid of Goliath. When
the Philistines attacked David’s people, he stepped forward and killed
Goliath with just one stone shot from his sling. The frightened
Philistines ran away.
When David grew older, he became king of Israel, the land where his
people lived.
You can see a large statue of David, as a young man, if you visit the
Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. The statue was made by
Michelangelo, an Italian sculptor who lived long ago.
