TINY HORSES

TINY HORSES

A pony is a small, but full-grown, horse. The smallest ponies of all are
the ones called Shetland ponies. Many of these tiny horses are less than
three feet (90 centimeters) high.

Shetland ponies are named for the islands they first came from — the
Shetland Islands, north of Scotland. Even though these shaggy ponies are
small, they are quite strong. They’ve been used as workhorses on farms
at home and in coal mines in England. In the United States, the
intelligent, sure-footed Shetland is popular as a children’s pet.

The people of the Shetland Islands also raise small, long-wooled sheep.
And to herd their small sheep and ponies, they bred small dogs, called
Shetland sheepdogs. These dogs look like tiny collies.
