A PREHISTORIC MONUMENT
On a broad plain in southern England stands a cluster of huge, tall
stones. They are the remains of something that was built by prehistoric
people, probably more than 3,500 years ago. Many people come to look at
this ancient ruin, which is called Stonehenge.
Over the centuries, many of the stones of Stonehenge toppled over, or
people took them away to make bridges and dams. But scientists can tell
how Stonehenge once looked. The stones were set up in a wide circle with
a smaller circle inside, and several pairs of stones inside that. They
were cut out of distant mountains and dragged all the way to where
Stonehenge was built.
Some scientists think Stonehenge was a temple where the sun was
worshiped. Others believe it was used as a kind of calendar by the
prehistoric people who built it. We will probably never know for sure.
