GOVERNMENT ON AN ISLAND
Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is mostly a city of islands and
bridges. In fact, it is built on more than a dozen islands that are
connected by about fifty bridges—which is why the city is often called
the “Venice of the North.” Founded in the early 1250’s, Stockholm has
been Sweden’s capital for more than four hundred years. It was named
Stockholm, which means “Isle of Logs,” because the first buildings were
made of logs.
Sweden has a king, but the laws are made by the Riksdag, or parliament.
The lawmakers, or Riksdagsmen, meet in the big parliament building on
the island of Helgeandsholmen, or “Island of the Holy Spirit. “
