Mountain Dance and Folk Festival
Along about sundown
Thrill to the music of the banjos, fiddles, and dulcimers. And listen as
the caller sings out the steps for the square dance:
\”Wave the ocean, wave the sea, Wave that pretty girl back to me!”
You’re at the yearly Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville,
North Carolina. This festival starts \”along about sundown” on the first
Thursday in August and lasts through Saturday. It’s a time when people
from Hominy Valley, Hanging Dog, Turkey Creek, and other towns in the
Great Smokies and Blue Ridge Mountains get together to sing and dance to
their special music.
You’ll hear such songs as \”Sourwood Mountain,” \”Soldier’s Joy,” and
\”Pretty Polly.” There is music and dancing the way these mountain
people have done it for hundreds of years.
From all over the country, and from parts of Europe, young and old alike
come to enjoy the oldest dance and folk festival in America. So pick
your partner and join in:
\”Swing her high, swing her low, Don’t step on that pretty little toe!”
