Egypt
People in Egypt have traveled in donkey carts for many years. Today,
cars, trucks, vans, and buses are common sights. Two worlds—the old
and the new—are side by side.

These two men are going to a big tribal celebration, like those held
long ago. Their fancy feather headdresses are part of a traditional
costume. But to get to the celebration on time, they depend on something
from the world of today—bicycles.

Ways to have fun are often borrowed from other cultures. These Indian
girls in Oklahoma are learning ballet—a form of dancing that began in
Italy more than five hundred years ago.
Sometimes, people of today’s world borrow ideas from the world of long
ago. This modern house is decorated with ancient Aztec Indian designs.
When people from the same country move to another land, they often like
to live together. This way they can keep their language and some old
customs. These children in the Chinese section of Boston are doing a
Tai-Chi exercise.
A modern, factory-made hydrofoil boat zips across Lake Titicaca in Peru.
It’s right out of today’s world. But the Indians who fish on the lake
use reed boats that are made by hand and belong to the world of long
ago.
