Every day, thousands of busy people hurry back and forth over city
sidewalks. They hardly ever look down at the gray concrete beneath their
feet—except to avoid tripping over a crack or a bump.

But in some cities, sidewalks are really something to see! Colored
stones, pebbles, and tiles form patterns and pictures to walk on.
Decorated sidewalks help make Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of the most
beautiful cities in the world.

Lisbon, Portugal, also has picture sidewalks. These pictures, made of
tiny, colored tiles, show great events in Portuguese history.

Sidewalks don’t have to be plain, gray concrete. They can be beautiful
patterns, designs, and pictures to walk on. But first, people have to
want them to be beautiful.
