How do you get to school?

Many children walk to school. Others ride their bikes. Some go to school
in a car or a bus. But how do children get to school when they live in
the middle of a lake?

In Colombia, South America, many families live in areas called
cienagas. A cienaga is a big, shallow lake or a reed-filled marsh.
Each house in a cienaga village stands on stilts—even the
schoolhouse. How do the children get to school? They climb into dugout
canoes and paddle over. And because the weather is always warm, they can
paddle to school all year round.

Children in Canada have a different problem. Here, the winters are long
and cold. Deep snow covers the ground for months. So, some of the
children have found a different way to get to school. They ride on
snowmobiles.

What’s a snowmobile? It’s a kind of sled on skis. But it has a motor.
Some snowmobiles are big enough to carry four people. The driver uses
handlebars to steer the snowmobile over ice and snow. It’s an easy, fun
way to get to school. How do you get to school?

Snowmobiles add excitement and fun to a trip to school.
