What’s new?

What’s new?

What’s the latest news? Did our team win yesterday? Will it rain
tomorrow?

Everyone wants to know what’s happening. We’re curious about things that
go on everywhere. Thanks to the invention of printing, people all over
the world can get the news in their newspapers.

Millions of newspapers are printed every day throughout the world.
Nearly every country has at least one newspaper that comes out every
day. Many big countries have hundreds of different newspapers. Some
newspapers are made up of many pages and are printed on a huge printing
press. Others may have only a single page that is printed on a small
copying- machine. Some are even written by hand.

In most countries, people buy them newspapers and bring them home to
read. But in some places, newspapers are put up on the walls of
buildings. It’s a common sight in China to see crowds of people reading
“wall newspapers.”

In some parts of the world there are a great many people who are too
poor to buy newspapers. To find out what’s new, they read the wall
newspapers. There are also many people who cannot read. So they go to
listen while someone reads the news aloud.

Russia

People pause on the street in Moscow to get the latest news from “wall
