Arrowhead

Arrowhead

Indians liked to eat arrowhead roots. They pulled the plants out of
the mud with their toes.

If you were an Indian long ago, you might have gone wading to get some
of your food.

Arrowhead is a plant with arrowshaped leaves that grows in water near
the edges of streams and ponds. When Indians saw these plants, they
might take off their moccasins and wade into the water. They would pull
the plants out of the mud with their toes. Then they would boil the
roots and eat them.

Arrowhead roots taste bitter when eaten raw. But when they are boiled
they taste a lot like potatoes. Maybe that’s why arrowhead is also
called duck potato.
