Growing a new arm

Growing a new arm

Sun Starfish

A starfish’s points are its arms. Most starfish have five arms. Some
have many more.

There’s an animal that has eyes and feet on its arms and turns its
stomach inside out when it eats! And if it loses an arm — it grows a
new one!

The animal is a starfish. Its body is shaped like a star. Each of the
points of the star is an arm. Most starfish have five arms, but some
have as many as fifty arms. On the underside of each arm are many tiny
tubes. These are the starfish’s feet. At the tip of each arm is a bunch
of little

A starfish’s feet are on the bottoms of its arms. The feet look like

Common Starfish

A starfish pulls a clam’s shell apart. Then the starfish puts its

spots. These are the starfish’s eyes. They can only see light and dark.

Starfish and Clam

If a starfish has an arm bitten or torn off by another animal, the
starfish can grow a new one. Sometimes an arm that has been torn off can
grow a whole new starfish!

When a starfish finds a clam, oyster, or scallop it climbs onto it. The
starfish pulls at each half of the clam or oyster shell. It pushes its
stomach out through its mouth and slides it between the two halves of
the shell. And it digests the clam or oyster right inside its own shell.
