LAKE IN THE SKY

LAKE IN THE SKY

If you were an Uru, you’d be an Indian. And you’d live on an
island—but not just any kind of an island. It would be an island that
you, yourself, would make of bundles of reeds.

You’d float your island on a lake—but not just any kind of a lake. It
would be the highest lake in the world that anyone can travel on.

What’s more, you’d build your own hut out of reeds. You’d build your own
boat out of reeds, too. You’d go fishing for trout in the morning —and
probably wear earmuffs at the same time because the mountain air is so
cold. In bad weather, your island would shimmy and shake. But you
wouldn’t mind. You’d be used to living that way, and you’d tell visitors
that your ancestors were older than the sun.

You’d be living on Lake Titicaca in the Andes Mountains in South
America, between the countries of Peru and Bolivia.

Indians live on Lake Titicaca in the Andes Mountains of South America
and travel in boats made of reeds.
