FULL OF BLARNEY
The Blarney Stone is in Blarney Castle near Cork, Ireland.
Aw, you’re full of blarney.” Maybe somebody has told you that. And maybe
he’s right. But if you really want to make sure you’re full of
blarney—according to one legend—you must go to a famous castle in
Ireland and kiss a special stone called the Blarnev Stone.
That isn’t as easy as it sounds.
When you get to the castle, you have to climb up one of its towers. Then
you have to lie on your back while you lean out over an opening high in
the tower. Two iron bars are all you hang onto while you bend your head
backward and downward to get close enough to kiss the stone.
The castle is the Blarney Castle near Cork, Ireland. The legend says
that long ago the owner of the castle saved it from attackers by making
promises and using flattery. The legend says that the Blarney Stone has
a kind of magic power. If you kiss the stone, you’re supposed to get the
power to become a clever talker. You’ll be able to flatter people and
talk your way out of trouble. When you do a lot of that kind of
talking—whether you kiss the stone or not—people say that you’re
full of blarney.
