Captain Billy’s tugboat and barge

lumber (scrap wood; dowel or old wooden broom handle)

For the hull of the tugboat, use a piece of scrap wood that is
longer than it is wide. -
To make a pointed bow, draw a triangle at one end of the wood, as
shown. Do not draw the dashed line.

Saw along the solid lines (see sawing, page 202). Sand the hull
(see sanding, page 203). -
To make the pilot house, sand two small scraps of wood and glue them
together. Then glue the pilot house to the boat. Put a brick or
heavy book on the pilot house. Let the glue dry.

For a smokestack, glue a small piece of dowel or old wooden broom
6 For the barge, use a rectangular piece of scrap wood a little
larger than the hull of the tugboat. Sand the barge. -
Put a finish on your tugboat and barge (see finishing, page
203). -
To make hooks so your tugboat can pull the barge, tap a nail into
the back of the tugboat and barge.
Hammer the nails over, as shown. Use a piece of string to tie the barge
to the tugboat.
You can pretend you’re Captain Billy as you sail your tugboat and barge
in your bathtub or swimming pool.
