The Animals’ World

We see, hear, smell, and feel the world around us. So do animals. But
many aniĀmals do these things in different ways. Some kinds of animals
can’t do all of them. Some kinds of animals do them better than others.
So, for each kind of animal, the world is different. Some animals see
colors, other animals see only shades of gray. For some animals the
world is filled with smells, for others there are no smells at all. Some
animals can’t hear. Some can’t see at all.
For some kinds of animals the world is very different. A bat’s world
is darkness filled with echoing sound. For a butterfly the world is
filled with shapes and colors and smells we can hardly imagine.
But each kind of animal has exactly the right kind of eyes, or nose, or
ears, or feelers, or tail, or other things it needs to find its way and
live its life in its world.
A painted lady butterfly smells its world through its feelers.

The great horned owl’s big eyes can see clearly in the dark.
